The Detroit Lions haven’t hosted a playoff game in 30 years.
Their first postseason guest since 1993 is plenty familiar with the place.
The Lions will host the Los Angeles Rams in the No. 3 vs. No. 6 NFC matchup of wild-card weekend, meaning former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford – now in his third year with the Rams – will be trying to play the role of spoiler in front of the fans who cheered him on from 2009-20.
On the other side, current Lions quarterback Jared Goff will face his former team and coach in Sean McVay.
Matthew Stafford’s history with Lions
The Lions selected Stafford with the first overall pick of the 2009 draft. He won the 2011 Comeback Player of the Year and led the Rams to the postseason that year, which marked the first time in 12 years the franchise qualified.

Stafford led Detroit to the postseason twice more. The Lions never found themselves on the winning side. Following three straight losing seasons from 2018-20 and the organization primed to rebuild, the new regime of general manager Brad Holmes – who arrived from the Rams – and head coach Dan Campbell made good on their promise to trade Stafford to a contender.
He won the Super Bowl in his first season with the Rams. His quest for another Lombardi Trophy now goes through Detroit.
Jared Goff’s history with Rams
The Rams selected Goff with the first pick of the 2016 draft. McVay took over the team the next season, with Goff and the Rams finding immediate success and making the playoffs. They made the Super Bowl a year later but fell to the New England Patriots without scoring a touchdown.
Goff lasted two more seasons with the Rams, but McVay eventually desired an upgrade at the quarterback position. That led him to Stafford and a championship.
